Just Because You Act in Movies Doesn’t Mean You Should Record an Album May 21, 2008

Dear Scarlett Johansson and Zooey Deschanel -

You’ve both had success as movie actresses, and now you want to get greedy (isn’t one entertainment industry profession enough?) and be singers, too. I’ve sampled both of your albums, and I regret to inform you that neither of you should quit your day jobs. Scarlett, your transgressions are worse because in addition to the fact that the producer saw fit to bury your voice in every song, you have managed to piss all over an album’s worth of Tom Waits covers. Bad girl. Zooey, charming though you may be, your contribution to music is nothing more than a vanity project. Keep it in your basement where it belongs.

Ladies, remember when Madonna couldn’t be satisfied with selling millions of albums? She just HAD to be taken seriously as an actress? Have the good sense to stop now. Work on your existing talents and leave the music to the folks with those chops.

For the following reasons:

1. I attended my first show at the Ryman Auditorium.

2. I had my first (three) mojitos. The hubby sampled and said, “That’s liquid crack.”

3. I did not finish all of my french fries. Seriously.

Uh, Is That the Same Song? May 15, 2008

There’s a new band on the country scene, Lady Antebellum. Just so you know, they’re not really country at all, but who is? Carrie Underwood? HA!

Anyhoo, their free download from iTunes a few weeks ago was called Love Don’t Live Here. I listened to it last night, and it’s a fine song. Not particularly memorable, but I will listen to it many more times on purpose. Then, it occurred to me that Madonna has a song by the name of Love Don’t Live Here Anymore from Like A Virgin. She’s at least old enough to be the mother of every member of Lady Antebellum.

I find the lack of anything new to be equally despair-inducing and comforting. Surprises aren’t always good, but once in a while would be nice.
